If you already have gastric or duodenal ulcers, cigarette smoking can delay their healing. Tobacco smoke causes duodenal ulcer relapse too. It weakens the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) and induces reflux of gastric acid through the oesophagus. This process is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Then, you will feel heartburn and regurgitation.
Cigarette smoking is one of the significant risk factors in Crohn’s disease (CD), which is a chronic (long-term) inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). If you have had CD and continue smoking, you will have poorer outcomes than non-smokers and individuals, who have stopped smoking. Direct smoking is also related to the recurrence of CD after surgery.
In addition, tobacco smoking is linked with increased risk of developing osteoporosis because, it reduces the bone density. Therefore, smoking raises the risk of fracture. It can delay the healing process of the fracture and cause more complications.
Smoking can cause the development and advancement of chronic (long-term) renal failure (CRF)/chronic kidney disease (CKD) because, there is a strong association between them.
Usually, smokers cannot remember faces and names compared to non-smokers. Exact cause of memory loss is still unknown. However, smoking is linked with increased risk of developing stroke and hypertension, which are causes of memory loss. It also gradually impairs the lung function. Individuals with good lung functions have strong memories in their old age. Additionally, cigarette smoking lowers the blood circulation of the brain, probably damaging the nerves.
Tobacco smoke is a significant risk factor for retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) or chronic periaortitis, which are extensive inflammatory conditions throughout the rear part of the abdomen. They can result in obstruction of the aorta and ureters.
