Pharmacological Management of Obesity

The management of obesity is basically based on regular physical activities, lifestyle modifications, and a healthy balanced diet. However, it may be difficult to manage obesity alone with them. Then, your doctor may prescribe some medications to solve the problem. Medications can be used in the short-term (for several months) or long-term (even up to two years) as an adjunct to the diet, lifestyle modifications, and exercise. However, drugs do not substitute for them. If you use medications without lifestyle changes, you can't achieve the weight loss goal.

Physicians may offer medications to manage obesity, if the person is an adult with,
  • His or her BMI of 30 or above OR
  • His or her BMI of 27 or above and the person has obesity-related complications, such as hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), diabetes mellitus, or hyperlipidaemia.
However, these medications may not be useful for everyone and have some adverse effects too. Some of them may help the patient feel early satiety or reduced hungry. Some may lower the absorption of fat from your diet. Physicians should consider drugs’ adverse effects, family clinical history, current drugs, and health problems before prescribing medication to manage obesity. People with obesity need close observation while taking obesity medication. Most results appear within the first six months of beginning the drug. After that, the patient may shed body fat more slowly or even continue to regain the previous weight. Weight loss medication should be used to treat obese people with the risk of complications. They should not be taken just for cosmetic advantage.

Lorcaserin, Orlistat, and Phentermine-topiramate, which are weight loss medications, are suitable for prolonged use (several months, even years). Other drugs, which inhibit appetite, are only appropriate for short-term usage. Most medications are purely recommended for adults. However, Orlistat can be used for children 12 years and older. All weight loss drugs should not be offered to pregnant women. Weight loss is also not recommended during pregnancy. If you are a woman, who are planning on pregnancy, you should stay away from some of these medications, because they may harm your unborn baby.
