Planning the Management of Panic Disorder

Whenever you first visit the GP or other health-care professional, you should tell them about your symptoms and their duration. They may ask you about family and social life, your routines and any drugs or other substances, which you are taking, including caffeine, alcohol, or other drugs. The health-care professional will explain and discuss all treatment options. They should respect your preferences, privacy, dignity, and confidentiality, when they plan the management. You and the health-care professional should then agree on the management plan.

It is far better you to ask following questions and know the answers.
  • What is panic disorder?
  • What are the management options for panic disorder?
  • Who can offer the treatment?
  • Are there any support groups for individuals with panic disorder in your local area?
  • What can you do and who can you contact in a crisis?
  • Can your family or carers get any information about panic disorder and its management?

Treatment options of panic disorder
  • Psychological treatment
  • Medication
  • Self-help

Effects of psychological treatment last the longest. However, different management options will match different individuals. Therefore, the health-care professional will discuss the management with you. Whichever you choose, the selected management plan should be accessible quickly.

Throughout the management, you may be requested to answer a set of questions at intervals to help you, and the health-care professional determine whether your condition is getting better.
