How to Support People with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?

If you are a family member or a carer of a person with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), you can play a significant part of the management. Usually, their health-care professional asks them whether they would like you to be engaged in their care. If the person would like to manage on their own, health-care professionals should respect their privacy and preference.

If the person with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) agrees to you being engaged, health-care professionals should provide information regarding GAD and the management plan, and how you can assist them throughout the care. You should also be provided information regarding what to do in a crisis, and contact numbers of voluntary organisations and health-care professionals. They should give you information regarding voluntary, local family and carer support organisations. Health-care professionals will help to contact with them, if the carer needs any support.

Anyone, who provides regular care for a person with GAD, has the right to a carer’s assessment. It is an assessment of a carer’s mental and physical health, and their requirements for a good care. Usually, it is done by social services. If the carer is 16 years or older and cares for a person with GAD regularly, they have the right to request the carer’s assessment. The carer should be provided a written carer’s support plan.
