How to Correct Body Postures During Pregnancy? - Part 1

Correct body postures and movements are essential factors for our well-being. During pregnancy, a woman experiences various changes in her body. Therefore, most women tend to keep up incorrect body movements and postures, which affect their health and well-being during pregnancy.

Pregnant women need to maintain correct body postures and movements, because it helps minimise body aches, pains, and discomforts during pregnancy. It also helps a woman to have a healthy childbirth and achieve the body shape following her pregnancy. However, it is important to follow correct body movements and postures before as well as after pregnancy.

How to sleep?

It may be difficult to sleep during pregnancy. The increasing size of your abdomen disturbs peaceful sleep. Heartburn and back pain also contribute to disrupt your sleep. The enlarged abdomen pushes the diaphragm and the lungs up, resulting in difficulty breathing.

First, sit on the bed. Then, lie down to a side, while bending your knees and bringing both legs onto the bed. When you get out of bed, turn to a side and bring your legs onto the floor. Keep your hand, which is above the body, on the bed. Bear your weight with the hand and sit on the bed. Now, you are ready to stand up.

Sleep on your side, especially left side. Keep a suitable pillow under your head. Bend the knees and legs. Place a soft pillow between the legs. Otherwise, you can bend your knee, which is above the other, and keep on a pillow, while keeping the other leg straight. Keep your hand comfortable as you wish. Sleep on side (SOS) position increases blood flow with oxygen and nutrients to your baby. If you have a back pain, you can place a soft pillow under the abdomen as well. Sometimes, propping up your upper body with extra pillows may help minimise heartburn and shortness of breath. Changing or rotating your position is acceptable. However, do not keep anything, which can compress your calves, because it can impair your blood circulation.

You should try to avoid certain sleeping positions. Sleeping on the stomach can be difficult because of your enlarged abdomen. Sleeping on the back can result in shortness of breath, heartburn, haemorrhoids, low blood pressure, and impaired blood flow to your baby and your heart. This is due to the compression of your major blood vessels and your gastrointestinal system by the enlarged uterus (womb).
